Condensation on a roof window – when is it normal and when is it a warning sign?

The heating season is starting, and with it the question: "my roof window is fogging up – is it faulty?". Usually not. We explain where condensation comes from, when it is normal and when it points to a problem with ventilation, installation or the window itself.

Heating cables for gutters and roofs – how they work and when they make sense

Icicles above the door, split gutters, streaked facades. We explain where the ice at the eaves comes from, how constant wattage and self-regulating cables differ, how much power to allow per metre of gutter and downpipe, and which six installation mistakes to avoid.

Replacing roof windows under the Clean Air programme – what can be funded?

An old roof window is often the biggest heat leak in the attic. Its replacement can be funded from the Clean Air programme – but not "just for the window". We explain the conditions, the required Uw value and the per-m² rates after the changes of 20 July 2026, and work out what the grant really amounts to.

What insulation to use under siding — mineral wool or EPS?

Siding is fixed to battens, so a new facade is the perfect moment to insulate the wall. We compare both materials — vapour permeability, fire behaviour, thickness and cost — plus four mistakes that ruin the job.

Window adjustment and maintenance - how to do it effectively?

Calendar summer is behind us. The days are quickly getting shorter and, unfortunately, colder. We change our wardrobe, stock up on umbrellas, and soon we will start thinking about winter tyres for the car. Yet we often forget about one of the most important elements protecting our home from the autumn weather - the windows.

Terrace windows - a comfortable exit onto the terrace from the attic

Natural light, better contact with the surroundings and convenient access to a terrace or roof balcony are the features that set apart terrace windows installed at the junction of the knee wall and the roof. Their design is thought out so that the upper part sits in the roof slope and the lower part in the knee wall, giving the interior a completely new perspective.

Questions & Answers

1. How do FAKRO windows differ from VELUX windows? +
It depends on the individual preferences of the customer. FAKRO windows focus largely on security. FAKRO has its patented topSafe anti-burglary system, meaning the reinforced window structure significantly increases the resistance of roof windows to break-ins and protects them from opening if the sash is accidentally stepped on. VELUX roof windows, on the other hand, offer excellent insulation thanks to ThermoTechnology, which translates into durability and safe use.
2. What is the average cost of buying a roof window? +
It depends on the material the window is made of, the number of panes and its dimensions. Wooden roof windows are relatively cheaper than PVC roof windows (FAKRO) or wood-polyurethane ones (VELUX). The larger the window, the higher the price. The average price of a wooden triple-glazed roof window measuring 78x118 starts from 1,800 PLN net upwards.
3. Wooden or plastic window? +
Wooden windows are recommended for rooms not exposed to increased moisture, e.g. living room, bedroom or day room. Plastic windows, on the other hand, are recommended for rooms such as the bathroom, kitchen or laundry, where moisture occurs much more often.
4. Should you choose bottom or top opening for roof windows? +
It depends on the height of the room. If we have easy access to the roof window, meaning we can close and open it without any problem, we can use windows with top or bottom opening. With a higher knee wall, bottom-opening windows will be easier to operate. In rooms where windows are installed above 2 metres and access is difficult, we suggest using remote-controlled electric or solar windows with an additional rain sensor, which will close automatically.
5. Do wooden roof windows need regular maintenance? +
Yes. Depending on the level of moisture in the room, the condition of the varnish should be checked regularly. Every year the hinges in roof windows should be greased. The frame should be thoroughly rubbed with sandpaper, and varnish applied to a dry and clean surface.
6. How often should roof windows be replaced? +
Roof windows should be replaced every 15-20 years. With plastic windows this period can be extended due to lower wear of the material.
7. What is the function of the air vent in roof windows? +
The air vent is responsible for proper attic ventilation, meaning it brings air from the outside into the room. Roof windows usually have one air vent installed in the upper part of the window, and it can be fitted (if the roof window does not have one) in any type of window, whether wooden or PVC.
8. Which windows are better, double or triple glazed? +
The main difference between double- and triple-glazed units is not only their construction but the resulting thermal insulation. Thanks to an additional pane, a spacer bar and a 'cushion' of noble gas, triple-glazed windows offer better protection against cold from outside and heat loss from rooms.
9. Why do roof windows fog up? +
The surface of the panes is naturally the coldest element separating the room from the outside world. As a result, the water vapour in the air condenses when it meets the cold pane surface. The room should be aired regularly.
10. What to look for when buying roof windows? +
The technical parameters of roof windows are key aspects that determine their functionality, energy efficiency and durability. When choosing the right roof windows, you cannot overlook issues such as the heat transfer coefficient, acoustic insulation or resistance to weather conditions.
11. How to clean a roof window? +
The sash of a roof window usually rotates 180 degrees and has a lock, thanks to which it can be locked in place for cleaning.
12. Which accessories best protect a room from overheating? +
The best choice of accessories for reducing room overheating is awnings. Internal blackout blinds also protect a room from overheating, but only by 40%, unlike external awnings, whose effectiveness is 8x better. Another solution is external aluminium roller shutters, which provide full blackout.
13. How to check the size of a roof window? +
All the information you need is on the rating plate located in the upper part of the sash (the opening part of the window). To find the window rating plate, open the roof window or, at greater heights, rotate the window 180° and lock it to read the plate.
14. Can I check materials for roof accessories at your showroom? +
Yes. We have FAKRO and VELUX manufacturer sample sets in stock. If you would like to see how a given material looks in reality, that is possible.
15. How to install a gutter correctly? +
The gutter should be installed so that at least half of its width extends beyond the edge of the roof slope, so that water running off the slope flows into the gutter channel.
16. How far apart should fascia gutter brackets (gutter mounting) be placed? +
It is recommended to place fascia brackets every 55-60 cm.
17. Can I connect my electrically operated FAKRO or VELUX roof windows with other smart products? +
Yes, you can. However, keep in mind that each manufacturer has its own communication protocol, and the devices you want to connect with the windows must work on the same protocol. FAKRO products work on the Z-Wave protocol and WiFi, while VELUX works on WiFi.
18. Which roof is the most durable? +
The most durable type of roof is a slate roof. Covering a roof with this type of material is also known as German covering. The durability of a slate roof is estimated at around 120 years. However, it is one of the most expensive types of covering.
19. Can I order delivery directly to the customer from you? +
Yes. In most cases it is possible. You can order roof windows from us with our installation, without having to collect the goods from our warehouse.
20. Is it possible to arrange a meeting with you on Sundays? +
Yes. After arranging a suitable date and time for the meeting, e.g. by phone or email.
