Terrace windows – a comfortable exit onto the terrace from the attic

Napisane przez: VENA DACH | 10 Lipca 2026

Natural light, better contact with the surroundings and convenient access to a terrace or roof balcony are the features that set apart terrace windows installed at the junction of the knee wall and the roof. Their design is thought out so that the upper part sits in the roof slope and the lower part in the knee wall, giving the interior a completely new perspective.

Thanks to this arrangement, light comes in from two directions, the view is incomparably wider, and the attic becomes a place where you want to spend more time. Importantly, depending on the chosen variant, the lower part can open to the right or left, allowing free access to the terrace, or remain non-opening, acting as fixed glazing that lights the interior.

This flexibility means these windows work perfectly both in homes where the terrace is used intensively and in projects where the priority is lighting and optically enlarging a closed space.

Functionality tailored to different lifestyles

Terrace and knee-wall windows offer a wide range of practical possibilities, so you can easily adapt them to the everyday needs of the household. The upper sash, installed in the roof, has two independent opening modes – top-hung and centre-pivot. The top-hung mode allows comfortable airing of the room and admiring the view without having to lean out, while the pivot function makes cleaning the panes easier and guarantees full access to the entire sash.

The lower part of the window, placed in the vertical knee wall, can be designed as an opening (side-hung) element, allowing convenient entry and exit outside regardless of the interior layout or furniture arrangement. In the non-opening version, the lower sash acts as fantastic additional glazing that lets in more light and requires no operation from the user. Whatever variant you choose, the modern construction is stable, easy to use and extremely durable.

The opening lower part of the knee-wall window smoothly connects the bedroom or living room with the outdoor terrace.

Comfort all year round – warm in winter, cool in summer

One of the most important advantages of terrace windows installed in the roof and knee-wall arrangement is their high thermal insulation. FAKRO products, which our company distributes and installs, use energy-efficient glazing units (e.g. the P50 unit) and thermoPro technology, among others. As a result, heat loss in winter is minimal, which helps keep a stable room temperature and reduce heating costs.

  • A heat transfer coefficient of 1.1 W/m²K means that energy stays inside the house in winter, and in summer the interior is effectively protected against heat waves.
  • Acoustic insulation of 37 dB significantly reduces noise from outside. This matters greatly if your terrace is near a busy street or in dense development.

As a result, regardless of the season and changing weather conditions, you can enjoy peace, privacy and a comfortable microclimate in your attic.

Bright, open interiors with a panoramic view

In homes with an attic, lighting plays a key role – it directly affects the perception of space and wellbeing. Terrace windows installed at the junction of the knee wall and the roof let you get the maximum benefit from natural light.

"Sunlight enters the interior both from above and at eye level. As a result, the room becomes brighter, gains a luxurious character and optically increases its floor area."

The version with an opening lower sash extends the living space with an additional outdoor relaxation zone. The variant with a fixed lower part, in turn, is a dream solution for investors who want to maximise the amount of daylight without creating a door to the outside. In both cases the effect is spectacular – household members gain direct contact with nature.

A look that harmonises with the architecture of the house

Besides their indisputable practical functions, terrace windows play an important role in the architectural appearance of the building. The combination of natural wood or smooth, white (moisture-resistant) surfaces allows the interior finish to be perfectly matched to the style of any room – from classic to modern minimalism.

From the outside, the whole is completed by elegant flashing in fashionable colours (such as anthracite, deep black or grey-brown), which is resistant to sun and rain. The absence of visible, thick joints between the upper and lower glazing makes the whole structure look coherent, and the large glass area further emphasises the modern form of the building.
